Midnight in the Garden  |  The partially demolished ruins of a 1927 lane in Shanghai. Neon and LED lights from advertisements atop nearby high-rise office blocks illuminate the lane with striations of ruby and amber and emerald and sapphire. It is hauntingly beautiful and tragically ephemeral. A month later, the ruins have vanished without trace, replaced by a car park  |  2015.

Vice Street  |  One of my Shanghai Frames series, photographed in the notorious, all-night lane, Zhapu Lu. In the beginning, I found it difficult to pronounce the street name in Chinese, so I called it ‘Vice Street’. Later, when the buildings were demolished, I rescued window frames from the rubble and mounted photographs of the street – prior to demolition – within the frames | 80cm x 35cm | 2015.
